The Cabin Cam looks around Whitehorse. The views not only show downtown and residential streets but also the forests and mountains including Grey Mountain in the southeast. Grey Mountain was originally called Canyon Mountain, because it overlooked Miles Canyon and the White Horse Rapids of gold rush fame. The rapids were so named because the men who sought gold in 1898 thought the extreme turbulance and spray resembled a white horse's mane. Of course the city is named after the rapids. The rapids were part of the Yukon River which runs through the city to the north and on to the gold fields of Dawson City. The rapids and the deepest part of the canyon are gone now, replaced by a tranquil Schwatka Lake. The lake was created by the construction of a power dam in the 1950’s, which flooded the canyon and rapids. This required a change in the mountain's name.
